Caufield East Home – Ensuite

The owners of our Caulfield East home wanted an upgrade to their existing downstairs bathroom to accommodate the varying needs of two energetic young boys and their busy parents.

A layout which originally included an oversized vanity crowding the small bathroom meant the space felt even more restricted. Situated off the main bedroom, the existing swing doors did not allow sufficient privacy in the space. The client is a chef, who is used to working in hospitality spaces with bold design choices so he didnt stray from including the same in this space. The stunning terrazzo flooring had already been purchased, therefore forming the building blocks for the new bathroom space.

The original Art Nouveau stained glass windows were a striking element of the room and informed the dramatic choice of colour for the vanity and upper walls, in conjunction with the terrazzo flooring. A large mirrored niche on the wall opposite was retained to reflect the windows, ensuring they became a feature from every angle of the room.

By consciously reducing the size of the vanity and introducing a tall mirrored shaving cabinet, the proportions of the space were enhanced, whilst simultaneously increasing functional storage. Redesigning the entry doors as a cavity slider allowed maximisation of the limited floor space, privacy, and the inclusion of a bigger shower-bath.

Balancing the demands of toddler bathing and an elegant sanctuary for the adults meant selecting fixtures which were both functional and stylish. A swivel tap in the bath and a swing screen ensures the shower-bath functions perfectly for all uses. The luxurious aged brass finish is juxtaposed against the moody dark green palette, and topping off the space is the brass kicker under the vanity, an inspired last minute suggestion from the client.

The end result is as individual as its owners, sitting cohesively within this beautiful Edwardian home and the family life that thrives in it.
